Melanie's Speaker Build

Melanie loves listening to music and her Amazon Dot speaker wasn't cutting it. I built this set of Overnight Sensations for my desk setup, and thought they'd work great in her room too. She assumed the role of design lead, and I was the build foreman / electrician.

The speakers are hooked up to a small SMSL class-B amp, using the Alexa Dot as the source. The Dot allows for voice command as well as Bluetooth connectivity, so Mel can tell her speakers to play music, or control it from her iPad.

Project Build

This is the second set of Overnight Sensation speakers I've built. My personal ones are finished in natural wood stain (not kitty stickers).

Build steps

  • Crossover soldering and testing
  • Cabinet construction, glued and clamped
  • Cabinet sanding and painting; paint is high-gloss ping spray paint, numerous coats.
  • Decorating with stickers!
  • Final assembly: Install binding posts and rear ports, fix crossover inside cabinet with hot glue, then hook up speakers to crossover and attach to cabinets.

The kit includes all cabinet, speaker, and crossover parts.

Crossovers are soldered together according the schematic.

Mitzy the cat assisting with crossover install into the freshly painted cabinet.

Fun stickers go over the glossy pink finish.

Gold-plated binding posts!

The stickers stay on surprisingly well.
